Opportunity Calling
Are you a local female artist living in the Sussex region? Do you have an interest in the life and works of Leonora Carrington (1917-2011)? Would you like to work with other artists in taking over The Regency Town House for this year’s Brighton Fringe? Then come and join us.
In the final week of Brighton Fringe Festival (28th May-1st June), the Regency Town House will be taken over for one week by The Writer’s Mark to celebrate the life and legacy of the enigmatic artist and writer of short stories – the extraordinary Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) – painter, artist, sculpture and writer.
As time passes, more works and stories are being shared about the female surrealists – and Leonora was an autonomous force in her own right, born in Lancashire England she rebelled against her family, and remained her authentic self – no longer Prim, but Leonora – the artist who is celebrated in Mexico where she spent the latter years of her life and now internationally in more recent exhibitions. The Writer’s Mark wanted to pay homage to her legacy, by creating work inspired by her life.
The Regency Town House (Brighton), will be open for The Brighton Fringe Festival from Wednesday 28th May to the 1st June. Set up will be Monday 26th May.
As part of this event we will have art installations on both floors of the space and are looking for artists to collaborate with for this project. Our focus of this project is to celebrate the life and legacy of the female surrealist, so all artists must be female to apply. All artists are welcome, however we are specifically looking for artists of multi-disciplines, technology/multimedia based and sculptures.
This is a voluntary role, with some expenses paid for materials/resources. We are currently in the process of fundraising.
We would like to hear your ideas and how more specifically they would be inspired by Leonora’s short stories: The House of Fear, The Oval Lady and A Man in Love. The stories can be found from her books or online. We also are keen to hear about your connection to her, her world, her life in Mexico and her works.
This is an amazing opportunity – The whole event will involve an exhibition to celebrate Leonora, theatre performances and workshops for adults and children.
To apply:
To apply, please submit a letter of interest with no more than one side of A4 or alternatively a short 2 minute video stating why you would like to be involved. Please state why you’re connected to the subject matter and nature of this project – you can include attachments of your work also.
Interviews will take place on Monday 10th February at The Regency Town House (Brighton) throughout the day – applicates must be available for Monday 17th February for our first planning meeting.
